Dell Vs Apple Displays

I have recently had to help make the choice of whether to get an Apple Diaply or a Dell display, unfortunatly due to time constraints we have to buy now which limits us in two ways, 1 we can’t wait for Apple to release the next genreation of Cinema Displays and 2, we also can’t wait for Dell to put a specal offer on one either, I say that because they do it quite often.

The two monitors that we are looking at are the Dell 24″ Monitor or the 23″ Apple Display.

Lets compare them shall we:

Dell

Size: 24″
Resolution: 1920 x 1200
Response Time: 16ms
Contrast Ratio: 1000:1
Inputs: VGA/DVI/S-Video/Composite/Conponent

Other Bits: It is height adjustable, has a 9-2 card reader, 3 year warranty

RR Price: £695

Apple

Size: 23″
Resolution: 1920 x 1200
Response Time: N/A
Contrast Ratio: 700:1
Inputs: DVI

Other Bits: 2 x USB and Firewire ports, good design

RR Price: £599

So there you have it. two pretty decent monitors, one with an elegant design, the other with bags loads of features and a few hight specs. The difference in pricing is £96 which could go towards a stick of RAM or another HDD.

I think that after looking at all the options, I would have one with the Apple, for the following reasons:

1. The Price, when it comes down to it thats all tat really matters
2. I don’t think that there is any circumstances where we would need to use the extra inputs of the Dell
3. We have a lot of card readers already

Of course if I were ordering one for myself I would go straight for the Dell, I’ve seen it go as low as £400 and I would love all the extra bits and bobs, though I think I would miss the style of the Cinema Displays.

Which would you choose? The Apple or the Dell? Leave a comment or use the contact form!

I must admit that I’m very pleased with the Apple display (23″). It has excellent clarity, brightness (much brighter than my Viewsonic 22″), excellent colour. It also has extra firewire/usb ports. But when you turn the screen off it wants to shut the computer down - not sure that’s a good idea although I haven’t tried to see if you can just turn the screen off and leave the computer running. The screen willl go into standby anyway after a time as is usual. The screen looks very good with a much narrower bezel than many screens - but then there are no built in speakers, you either use the speaker in the cpu or buy the apple speaker bar which hangs off the bottom of the screen I think - or use external speakers as I am. The screen is in brushed aluminium so matches the cpu. Don’t see why we have to have a separate power supply brick though - that should have been incorporated into the screen or the stand - or else the screen should be powered from the main cpu.

    Hi Techgeeklife

Just dropped by and wanted to say thanks for what I think is a very fair and straight forward comparison of the two monitors. Wish you well in your decision.

Obviously I am biased and normally I would not necessarily post a comment and join this kind conversation. However, by fluke I recently ordered and received the Dell 24” monitor you are considering. I have to tell you it is a beauty…with the large color gamut (important to my digital photography on the side), all the plug-ins….and that extra inch of monitor real estate is like a mile :-).

I love working on this monitor, like I have never before enjoyed….personally even though I am likely an “invalid” opinion, given my work. Thanks for listening though

OK so you are buying a new display… when you say “we are buying” I assume you mean me, and if you do, hadn’t you better tell me? :-)

I have both the 23″ cinema display on a Mac and a Dell 2405FPW on a Dell side by side. When I view the same photo on the two system using Photoshop CS3, the color brightness and sharpness on the Cinema Display is far superior then on the Dell. The Dell looks washed out with a slight blur to the image. Would highly recommend the Cinema Display. I own a 20″, two 23″ and soon purchasing a 30″ Cinema Display.
